Join us for the opening of Grit & Grain: Four Decades of Lens-Based Practice at FIU, an exhibition that draws from lens-based works in the Frost Art Museum collection to examine the lasting influence of FIU’s photography program over nearly four decades. Grounded in a teaching approach that emphasized intuition, close looking, and the artist as a critical witness, the exhibition brings together work by program alumni alongside photographs by faculty.

As part of the opening, you’re invited to a hands-on typewriter poetry night. Writing on restored typewriters provided by Patton Horton, visitors are invited to respond to imaginative prompts led by Mario Avalos, a writing instructor at Florida International University, and compose their own original texts. Avalos’s practice spans poetry and screenwriting, with work published by O, Miami.

Music for the evening will be provided by DJ Romulo, a longtime cultural presence in Miami who co-founded Schematic Music Company and has helped shape the city’s music scene.
