This event will now take place at the Student Academic Success Center located on FIU's MMC Campus, 11200 SW 8th ST, Miami, Florida 33199.
Spend the afternoon with the Frost Art Museum for Save the Panther Day, a special event celebrating Florida’s state animal through art, education, and conservation advocacy.
Beginning at 4, join conservation filmmaker and FIU student, Luca Martinez, as he takes you on a visual journey through the Florida Everglades. From swimming eye-to-eye with alligators to documenting the quiet lives of barred owls, Luca reveals the beauty and complexity of the Everglades. Through his lens, you’ll witness both the wonder and fragility of this rarely experienced ecosystem. Learn what has driven Luca to reach 450 million people worldwide on his mission to share, change perceptions, and protect the Florida Everglades.
Following Martinez's presentation, guests can gain insight into wildlife conservation and environmental protection with an inspiring panel discussion moderated by Dr. Mireya Mayor featuring Native American educator and environmental activist Betty Osceola and Luca Martinez. A reception will follow the discussion, providing an opportunity to continue conversations and connect with fellow conservation advocates.
Cultural Sensitivity Notice: We recognize and respect that owls hold significant cultural meanings in many Native American traditions. In some communities, they are associated with the spirit world, omens, or death, leading some individuals to avoid looking at them. As a gesture of respect, we will provide an “Owl to Follow” warning on slides before any owl images are shown. If you would prefer to look or step away during these moments, we fully support your choice.
