In conjunction with the exhibition, Everything, Earth and Sky, please join us for a conversation about Haitian art and culture. Featured speakers include Dr. Jerry Philogene, Asser Saint-Val, and Dr. Fredo Rivera. Following the conversation, attendees can enjoy a tour of the exhibition and refreshments.  

Dr. Jerry Philogene, Associate Professor of American Studies at Dickinson College, specializes in 20th century African American and Afro Caribbean visual arts and cultural history. Her teaching interests include interdisciplinary American cultural history and Black cultural and identity politics. Her research interests explore the intersections of race, ethnicity, class, and gender as articulated in contemporary visual and popular culture.

Asser Saint-Val is a native of Haiti, lives and works in Miami, Florida. He earned BFAs in Painting and Graphic Design from the New World School of the Arts / University of Florida (2004). His work has been exhibited in international art fairs, museums, galleries, in Washington DC, Miami, New York, North Carolina, Tennessee, West Palm Beach, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Argentina, and universities around the US.  

Art and architectural historian Dr. Fredo Rivera is Assistant Professor of Art History at Grinnell College, where they teach classes on modern and contemporary architecture and urban visual culture, as well as the art of the Americas, with a focus on the Caribbean. Professor Rivera’s research current research focuses on art, visual culture and the built environment in Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico and Florida, as well as queer expression amongst the Caribbean diasporas and across the archipelago.
