Want to combine your love of craft with your belief in social justice? Join us for a talk with Americans for Immigrant Justice and artist and FIU Alumna Aurora Molina. We’ll be discussing immigration, art, and activism while learning sewing and embroidery techniques.
For this workshop, we’ll be joined by Ariela Moscowitz, Director of Community Relations for Americans for Immigrant Justice, who will discuss the organization’s mission and their partnership with Molina’s initiative, So (Sew) America Cares, a participatory social art project with a commitment to raise awareness about the lives of the children separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Molina will discuss this project and teach viewers simple techniques to embellish their canvas.
Participants may purchase sewing kits in advance from Americans for Immigrant Justice for $25*. The kits, part of the So (Sew) America Cares project, come with thread, needle, and a canvas that has been laser etched with a child’s face. The images of the children are composites of kids who were kept at detention centers in the US. However, kits are not required to join us for this timely conversation.

This workshop is part of our programming for Otros Lados: Itzel Basualdo, Hugo Crosthwaite, and Judithe Hernández. This exhibition brings together three generations of artists who bring distinct perspectives to Mexican and Mexican American experience.
