Museum Guidelines and Safety

The Frost Art Museum–FIU strives to maintain a safe, comfortable, and respectful environment for all visitors. We also take our role as guardians of the objects in our care very seriously.

Look But Don't Touch

As a general rule, please do not touch any objects on display; the salts and oils naturally produced on your hands are damaging to artworks, even sculpture and furniture.

Visitor Guidelines

  • Baggage

    All parcels, umbrellas, and bags larger than 11” x 15” must be checked, including backpack-style child carriers. Bags in excess of 11” x 15” containing needed medical equipment or for use in nursing or baby care are allowed in the museum. All bags are subject to inspection by security staff upon entrance and exit of the museum.  

  • Personal Items

    Laptop computers, cameras, and other valuables items cannot be checked without a bag. Please leave these items at home or plan to carry them throughout the duration of your visit. The museum is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

  • Attire

    Shirts and footwear are required for entry. Swimwear is not permitted in the galleries.

  • Mobile Phone Policy

    Please show consideration for your fellow visitors by exiting the galleries to talk or text on your mobile phones. We encourage the use of headphones for listening to audio in the galleries, and prohibit audible noise originating from the use of a mobile device.

  • Mobility Devices

    Mobility devices such as wheelchairs, strollers, and canes are allowed in the galleries. Manual wheelchairs are available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis at the visitor services desk. Please return all wheelchairs after your visit.

  • Gallery Seating

    Free gallery stools are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. These lightweight folding seats are available at the reception desk. Please return them at the end of your visit. If you have any questions regarding museum accessibility, please call the visitor services desk at 305-348-2890.

  • Photography

    The Frost Art Museum–FIU permits handheld photography for personal, non-distributional, noncommercial use in its exhibitions unless otherwise posted. Please check the wall signage to confirm. Working members of the media, formal portraits, event photography, and any other commissioned photography require prior written permission from the Frost Art Museum. For the safety of our visitors and collections, the use of tripods, monopods, may only be used in the galleries with prior permission from the museum. Permission requests may be sent to artinfo@fiu.edu. Please allow 2 weeks for the review and consideration of all permission requests. Same-day requests will not be considered or approved. All photographers must be escorted by a museum staff member while in the building.

  • Sketching

    Sketching is permitted in the museum galleries unless otherwise posted. Please check the wall signage to confirm. Please be extremely careful with your drawing tools; show respect for the artwork and your fellow visitors. Drawing boards and sketch pads may be no larger than 18 x 24 inches and we allow “dry” media only: pencils, wax crayon, conte crayon, and erasers. Pens, loose ink, fountain pens, oil crayon, paint (including watercolors), easels or stands, and charcoal or pastel in stick form are not allowed.

  • Zero-tolerance policy toward hate speech

    At the Frost Art Museum–FIU, we are committed to fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment for all visitors, staff, and community members. We believe that art and culture have the power to bring people together, promote understanding, and inspire positive change.

    As part of this commitment, we have a zero-tolerance policy towards hate speech of any kind. Hate speech includes any form of communication that belittles, discriminates, or incites violence or prejudice against individuals or groups based on their race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or any other characteristic. Such behavior is contrary to the values of respect, diversity, and inclusion that we uphold.

    We expect all visitors, staff, and participants in our programs and events to adhere to this policy and to contribute to a positive and respectful atmosphere. Any instances of hate speech will be addressed promptly and appropriately, ensuring that the Frost Art Museum–FIU remains a place where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected.

  • What types of behavior is prohibited in the galleries?

    For the protection of the objects and the comfort and safety of all visitors, please refrain from the following behavior in the museum galleries:

    • Carrying backpacks, large bags, or portfolios
    • Carrying children on shoulders or on back
    • Eating, drinking, and chewing gum
    • Carrying umbrellas
    • Smoking, including electronic cigarettes and vaping devices
    • Running, yelling, horseplay or disruptive behavior
    • Playing music or recordings out loud on mobile devices
    • Phone conversations
    • Demonstrating or solicitation
    • Flash photography
    • Videotaping
    • Using selfie sticks, tripods, monopods and photography lighting equipment
    • Using flashlights or laser pointers
    • Using pens, markers, charcoals and pastels or solvents
  • Which items are not permitted in galleries?

    The following items are prohibited in the Frost Art Museum–FIU galleries:

    • Tripods
    • Monopods
    • Selfie sticks
    • Weapons (guns, knives, etc)
    • Pets
    • Food and drinks
    • Scissors
    • Aerosol cans, including pepper spray and Mace
    • Spray paint
    • Tools
    • Placards, signs, or banners
  • Which items are allowed in the galleries?
    • Bags and backpacks under 11” x 15”
    • Headphones
    • Service animals
    • Wheelchairs
    • Mobility aids including canes, walkers, etc.
    • Strollers
    • Cameras (without flash)
  • I am not feeling well. Can I still visit the museum?

    No. For the safety of visitors and staff, stay home if you are feeling sick or have a fever. The Frost Art Museum operates in accordance with the latest guidelines from FIU and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to ensure the health and safety of the public and staff. Please respect all museum visitors' individual preferences regarding face masks and social distance.
