Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, '75, MS '87, is a groundbreaking congresswoman. In 1989, she became the first Latina elected to the US Congress. During her nearly thirty years in Congress, she received several prominent appointments. Notably, she served as Chairwoman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and led on issues pertaining to human rights and the environment. Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen is also the first alumna of Florida International University elected to Congress having earned her master’s and bachelor’s degrees from FIU prior to receiving an Ed.D. from the University of Miami.
