How does collective and historical memory shape the experiences of people living in exile from their native land? For our next Mixtape Monday, we've invited Michael J. Bustamante. Dr. Bustamante will discuss the Cuban exile experience, Cuban American politics, and the letters written by Cubans in exile.

Michael J. Bustamante, Ph.D. is Assistant Professor of Latin American History at Florida International University, specializing in modern Cuba, Cuban-America, and the Caribbean.  Dr. Bustamante’s current book project,  Cuban Counterpoints: Memory Struggles in Revolution and Exile, tracks clashes over Cuban collective and historical memory, on and off the island, in the wake of the 1959 Revolution. His scholarly writings have appeared in Journal of American Ethnic History, Latino Studies, Cuban Studies, and Perspectives on History, among other publications.

Mixtape Mondays present ideas from FIU faculty across disciplines, using the museum’s collection as a focal point to talk about their research interests. Join us for an informal conversation over free drinks provided by our sponsor Biscayne Bay Brewing Company.
