Public Art at FIU
Art in public places has been integral to FIU’s campus since the establishment of the University in 1972. FIU commissioned Albert Vrana to create the bronze Las Cuatro Razas (The Four Races), which adorns the north facade of FIU’s first building, Primera Casa. Vrana’s sculpture relief, inspired by his years of travel in Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe, exemplified the new public university’s ambitions to serve Florida’s diverse population.
FIU’s Avenue of the Arts, where the Frost Art Museum sits, remains the focal point of the University’s public art program. This well-traveled corridor connects the dynamic Wertheim Performing Arts Center to the Graham Center, a gathering place for students. The landscaped green open space features sculptures by Alexander Liberman, Manuel Mendive, Pablo Atchugarry, and John Henry.
